For the money these MTD Kingston basses are world class. MTD stands for “Michael Tobias Design” who has been designing instruments since 1974. Michael Tobias worked for Tobias guitars until 1992, and then started building MTD instruments in 1994. Based in Woodstock, New York – he only builds about 10 per month. Michael says that all of his instruments are designed acousticly to sonically sound great before the pickups even do the amplification.

Here’s a YouTube video of an MTD Kingston 5 String:

The MTD Kingston Artist 5-String features a medium weight, ergonomically carved Basswood body and a bolt-on Eastern hard rock Maple neck. The Artist bass guitar comes with exposed-pole MTD MM style alnico humbucking pickups and includes active electronics. Custom made MTD bridge and tuners in black. Like all fretted Kingston basses, the Artist utilizes the Buzz Feiten Tuning System.
